Step 01

Specimen Collection

Preparation protocols that preserve diagnostic integrity

Collection Requirements

Peripheral Blood

EDTA tube (lavender top), 3–5 mL. Draw within 4h of smear preparation. Temperature: 18–22°C during transit.

Bone Marrow Aspirate

EDTA anticoagulant, ≥2 mL. Clot-free — critical for flow cytometry viability. Concurrent core biopsy in formalin.

Coagulation Studies

Sodium citrate tube (blue top), 2.7 mL. Fill to line precisely. Spin within 1h; double-centrifuge for platelet-poor plasma.

Packaging Protocols

Primary Container

Leak-proof, labeled with two patient identifiers. Specimen ID barcode affixed to tube body — not cap.

Secondary Containment

Absorbent material wrapping. Rigid outer box, Category B UN3373 labeling for biological substances.

Requisition Form

Marrow REQ-1 form — clinical history, ICD-10 code, referring physician NPI, and specimen collection timestamp required.
